The author, a plant pathologist, conceived the idea for the original primer while teaching rice production courses at IRRI. He became aware of the lack of simple but precisely written information that clearly explained good-rice growing practices.
The original edition of this manual focused on problems in Asia, the revision also identifies common problems in Africa and Latin America.
