The major factors in establishing a seed crop are:

  1. Selecting seed rate
  2. Cleaning of rice seed
  3. Criteria of healthy seed


Selecting seed rate:

Proper seed rate is necessary to get appropriate number of seedlings with uniform and healthy growth. Establishing the correct number of plants is essential. Establishing the correct number of plants is essential to maximize water and nutrient use. A target population that results in 400-500 panicles per m-2 is desirable. This means establishing at least 25-30 seedling m-2 when transplanting, or broadcasting 80-120 kg ha-1 when direct seeding or 60-80 kg ha-1 for seed drill.

Low populations may result in:

  • Increased tillering, which creates more
  • Variation in panicle maturity
  • Increased weed populations, and
  • Reduced yield potential of the variety.

High plant populations may reduce yield and quality by:

  • Competing for water and nutrients,
  • Mutual shading, and
  • lodging and reduced grain size.


Cleaning of rice seed

Healthy and viable seeds are prerequisites for healthy seedlings and good stand. Bringing out from the store, after one day drying in sun, you can do a final cleaning of seed. Remember, you have already cleaned the seed immediately after harvest and before storage.

For a small quantity of seed, you may use manual sorting. This may be the situation when you have a small quantity of a variety or your variety is mixed and of poor quality. Just before sowing seed in the seed bed you can also use seed floatation.

For remaining empty seeds and damaged seeds using a solution of urea in water can help to quickly separate.

Treating your seed

You may have the option to treat your seed. Please note: You may not have this option in your area.

  • Seed treatments prevent/control seed, even airborne diseases, and ensure healthy seedling and crop stand.
  • Farmers’ saved seed may be infested/infected with a number of microbes, many of which may induce disease on seedlings/crops. They may affect seed germination and may be transmitted from seed to seedling to plant/crop. By seed treatment, the pathogens are suppressed.
  • Seed treatment improves seed germination, seedling, and plant vigor and productivity.

Seed biopriming is treating your seed with a fungal agent and results in more vigorous seedlings.
