Storage of rice seed
Be able to select the best method of storage for your rice seed.
Often, you need to keep seed safely for a period of time. This could be from one harvest to the next, or from harvest to marketing. You must store seed after harvest to whenever it is needed. This storage can be short-term, medium-term, or long-term. Good storage maintains the quality of the seed.

The goal of all storage is to maintain seed quality in a safe and secure environment. The ideal storage condition is that there is no exchange of air or moisture between the seed and the external environment. That is, storing the seed under hermetic or airtight conditions.

Air-tight storage has advantages in maintaining the quality of your seed. The initial moisture content of the seed in the store is maintained. With only a little air in the air-tight container initially, the air is rapidly used because of respiration by the seed and any insects. Within a short time, the amount of air is reduced to such an extent that it cannot support the respiration of insects, which eventually die out. However, there is always enough oxygen to support respiration of the seed.

2. Read the fact sheet on the IRRI super bag by clicking here. Discuss how you would use the IRRI super bag.

3. Design a one-page fact sheet that can be given to farmers informing them of how best to store rice seed.
