History

The disease was first described and reported in 1900 as seedling blight in Japan. In 1916, brown spot was named sesame leaf blight because of the oval spots resembling the shape of sesame seeds; a name still currently used in Japan.

 

Distribution and Occurrence

Brown spot has a worldwide distribution in all rice-growing countries including Asia, America, and Africa.
