What are the elements of the preparation component?
Name and describe the three elements contained in the preparation component of a lesson.

  Elements of the preparation component
Of all the components in a lesson, the preparation component is the most important. This component pulls the learner into the lesson and establishes what they will accomplish by the lesson's end. To check your understanding of each element in the preparation component, click, hold, and drag the following buttons to their appropriate place on the image below. If you are correct, the button will stay where it was placed. If incorrect, the button will snap back to its original position.

Title

Simply stated, the title element is the title of the module. Its placement above the anticipatory set and learner objective is strategic and anchors the learner's context for the lesson within the larger framework of the module and the course.

Anticipatory set

The anticipatory set is one of the tricks of the trade for drawing learners into a lesson. In traditional classroom instruction, the anticipatory set can range from an interesting demonstration for which the instruction will later explain, to simple queries which pique the learner's interest; making them want to know more (Socrates was fond of this method).

At the beginning of each knowledge bank lesson, you will find the latter; a simple query which is answered by exploring the lesson's content.

Writing an effective anticipatory set
Writing an effective query for the anticipatory set is easy if you refer to the text in the Content column from the table you created in Module 2 - Analysis, Lesson 7. The diagram below shows the Content column from the course component table which was used to develop Module 4 of this course. Roll your mouse over each of the content areas to view a corresponding query for the anticipatory set.

Next lesson
In the next lesson, you will learn about the third element of the preparation component, learning objectives.
