Design

What are the components of a lesson?
Name the four components of a lesson and describe the instructional functionality of each.

  Presenting course content
There is no limit to the variety of ways you can design and present content in an e-Learning lesson. However, given the limitations associated with reading from a computer monitor, experienced e-Learning designers recognize that lessons must maintain a consistent and easily readable format.

The lessons contained within the Rice Knowledge Bank follow such a format and are built with four components:

  1. Preparation
  2. Instruction
  3. Transition
  4. Navigation

Roll your mouse over each of the highlighted areas in the image below to learn more about the preparation, instruction, and navigation.

Transitioning between lessons

Transition is the last component a user encounters in a knowledge bank lesson. At the bottom of each page, you will notice a subhead titled Next lesson and a transitional paragraph that previews the content for the next lesson.

This component:

  • establishes the learner's context within the subject matter,
  • provides a final moment of reflection on the knowledge gained during the lesson,
  • and provides closure to the lesson by relating it to the next lesson.

The transition for this lesson is displayed below in the Next lesson section.

In the next lesson, you will learn about the elements contained within the preparation component.
